Pembina is grouped under "Energy" alongside CNQ and Suncor, but its business model has almost nothing in common with either. It's worth separating out.

What Pembina Actually Does

Pembina Pipeline owns and operates pipelines, gas processing plants, storage, and export terminals that transport and handle oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids across Western Canada and beyond. Critically, Pembina mostly doesn't own the oil or gas moving through its system — it charges fees for transporting and processing other companies' product, similar to a toll road operator.

Why That Distinction Matters

Because Pembina earns fee-based income under long-term contracts rather than selling commodities directly, its cash flow is far less directly exposed to swings in oil and gas prices than CNQ's or Suncor's. What matters more for Pembina is production *volume* moving through its pipelines — if Canadian oil and gas producers keep shipping, Pembina generally gets paid, roughly regardless of what the underlying commodity is worth that quarter.

The Monthly Dividend

Unlike most of the other names in this fund, Pembina pays its dividend monthly rather than quarterly — a detail income-focused investors often specifically look for, since it lines up more naturally with monthly expenses.
