Same finish line — not needing to work — but nobody's tightening their belt to get there. Fat FIRE means keeping the nicer car, the regular travel, the bigger home, and still not needing a paycheque. It takes a much larger portfolio to support that spending level, so it usually takes longer to reach or requires a higher income along the way.
Someone spending $150,000/year needs roughly $3.75M invested (25× expenses) to sustain that lifestyle indefinitely — more than 4x what a Lean FIRE target might require. The trade-off is time: it usually takes longer to build, but the retirement on the other side has a lot more room in it.
